Environmental strategy

We are working with trade bodies and individual companies to help the UK film industry reduce its impact on the environment and, in particular, its carbon emissions.

"There is still time to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, if we take strong action now. The costs of stabilising the climate are significant but manageable; delay would be dangerous and much more costly."

This powerful challenge opens 'The Economics of Climate Change' by Sir Nicholas Stern, the most authoritative report that has yet been written about the costs and consequences of our impact on the Earth's environment.

Climate change is happening. Each of us contribute to it. All of us can help prevent it. With its huge popularity and high public profile the world's film industry is in a great position to set an example of leadership and good practice.

To give that ambition a practical edge, the UK Film Council (now BFI) commissioned a report Developing an Environmental Strategy for UK Film. It said we should:

  • Develop a proactive environmental strategy with strong messages and clear guidance
  • Set our own house in order by developing an environmental management system with long-term goals
  • Work with the whole industry to define a strategy for environmental sustainability, with an overall vision and targets.

We are now working with trade bodies and individual companies to pull together information, advice and examples of good practice to help the UK film industry reduce its impact on the environment and, in particular, its carbon emissions. We are establishing working groups to look at the different challenges that confront production, distribution and exhibition.

We are also 'setting our own house in order' with an audit of the BFI's environmental impact and a programme aimed at engaging all our staff in re-thinking the way we work and travel.
